One method that I have used in the past is to write a contract that only covered “discovery.” Then after the discover contract was completed we would produce artifacts such as basic requirements, user stories, or general estimates. This small contract usually allowed us to get some trust with the client as well as get some actual analysis behind an estimate.

With that said I think you have posed some excellent concepts behind new ways to write contracts.</description>

Instead of signing a huge contract, both parties agree to start with a smaller project (fewer number of iterations). If the client likes what they see -- and with well-run agile, they usually do -- they should have no problem expanding the contract to add more iterations.</description>
