Developer Faceoff: Sergio Pereira vs. Angelo Anolin

This month’s Developer Faceoff highlights two developers that contributed to the Writer’s Block Contest: Sergio Pereira vs. Angelo Anolin.

Sergio Pereira has been developing software professionally since the mid 90’s. After a short period of desktop application development, he changed his focus to web development and never looked back. Addicted to learning, he constantly looks at 3-month old code and wonders how could he produce such atrocity. Sergio often contributes to devlicio.us and twitter.

Angelo Anolin started his computer career back in 1996 as a Civil Engineer, but got involved with programming around 2004 initially with Sybase Powerbuilder. He now develops in .NET for an oil and gas exploration company in Brunei. Angelo is a knowledge hungry developer that believes there is not only room for improvement but for also accumulating knowledge. Angelo can be found at his blog and twitter.

1. How long have you been developing?	Yikes, I’ve been paid to do this for 12 years.	Humanly – Since Birth. Professionally – 5 Years.
2. What is your favorite language to date?	Ruby, it still has that new car smell to me.	VB.Net
3. What is your favorite pattern/architecture?	I like anything that contributes to the removal of dependencies. I’ll say the Template Method pattern because it’s simple and often shows someone starting to grok OO design.	Architecture that works best for the project I am involved in.
4. Is formal academic education necessary for development?	Not necessary. It’s still a new field and people can get by being self-taught.	It helps, but the factor is still you – the student.
5. Are software developers – engineers or artists?	Craftsmen. Code should not be subject to personal interpretations – it’s not Art, we don’t have time for that.	Engineer (I am an engineer myself).
6. Do you blog? If so how long and how many subscribers?	I finally started blogging last year. According to feedburner, 3.5K subscribers.	Just started one late last year. No statistics yet.
7. If you could read only one blog, which one would you pick?	Kathy Sierra’s – Creating Passionate Users (even if just the archives)	www.noop.nl
8. What is the biggest mistake you made along the way?	Assumed everyone that works with me cares as much about the software as I do.	Overlooking life beyond the keyboard and monitor.
9. Anyone in the software community you are star struck around?	Anders Hejlsberg. I wish all the great contributors of our industry were as well-spoken and coherent as him.	Jurgen Appelo

Developer Faceoff: Scott Bellware vs. JP Boodhoo

I am pretty excited about this month’s Developer Faceoff: Scott Bellware vs. Jean-Paul Boodhoo – The War of the Short, Bald, and Passionate.

Scott Bellware is a software product designer and developer living in Austin, TX. He is probably best known for his brutal honesty and “get-off-your-ass” attitude, but only because Scott is super-human active in the conference and organization circuits having founded AgileATX, co-founded the Austin .NET UG, and organized numerous DevTeach and ALT.NET conferences. He has been a Microsoft MVP since 2004. His current passion is preaching the benefits of Agile and BDD development practices.

JP Boodhoo is an independent consultant best known for his tagline - Develop with Passion! He has a passion for sharing information with the development community by being featured on .NET Rocks, Polymorphic Podcast, and is a MVP. When not developing, he can be found relaxing with his wife and their four kids.

Although I hear JP has been growing some hair, I can’t think of a shorter, balder, and more passionate faceoff. Here we go!

1. How long have you been developing?	17 years professionally. I wrote my first code in 1981 on a TI-99/4A.	8yrs old to 9 yrs old -> 22yrs old to now (29). Total dev time = 8 years.
2. What is your favorite language to date?	Ruby, presently.	I love C# 3.5
3. What is your favorite pattern/architecture?	I try hard not to end up with a favorite pattern or architecture for having seen how pattern fixation can ravage a project.	I love smart client architectures.
4. Is formal academic education necessary for development?	Yes, but I believe that formal and academic education can be self-directed and that entitled, traditional institutions do a poor job of it.	It can definitely help, but it is no substitute for drive and passion.
5. Are software developers – engineers or artists?	Both. There’s engineering in art and art in engineering.	My business card title is Software Artist, creativity is key.
6. Do you blog? If so how long and how many subscribers?	I have blogged. I have no idea how many subscribers.	2 years and 1 month, ~2500 subscribers (jpboodhoo.com)
7. If you could read only one blog, which one would you pick?	The value of my blog roll is its diversity. If there were only one possible blogger to read, I’d stop reading.	Tim Ferris, 4 hour work week baby!!
8. What is the biggest mistake you made along the way?	I’ve invested faith into things that in retrospect are obviously faith-resistant.	Going through periods of youthful arrogance where I discounted opinions of awesome coworkers.
9. Anyone in the software community you are star struck around?	No, not really. There are probably a couple dozen people tied for first, and the list constantly adapts organically.	Nope. Everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time.
10. What is the secret of your success, expressed in one word?	Analysis	God

Developer Faceoff: Scott Hanselman vs. Phil Haack

Welcome to the first Ultimate Developer Faceoff!

Developer Faceoff will be a monthly spotlight where 2 well known developers will answer some quick questions side-by-side, and the readers get to pick the winner!

For the first faceoff, I can’t think of two more visible developers: Scott Hanselman vs. Phil Haack – The Battle of the .NET Bloggers.

Scott Hansleman has been on the forefront of technology and blogging for many years. Before recently joining Microsoft, Scott is most famous for his blog Computer Zen, where he releases famed “Ultimate Tool” lists, and primary driving force behind the Das Blog project. His recent adventure is trying his hand at podcasting which can be found at Hanselminutes.

Phil Haack is most known for his blog Haacked. Rarely off-topic, he flexes his mature .NET development skills with in-depth examples and anecdotes. By day, he is a Sr. Program Manager at Microsoft – by night, he is the lead of Subtext an open source blog engine.

I can’t think of a more evenly matched faceoff. Here we go!

1. How long have you been developing?	For money? 16 years this next Feb. For fun? Since COMPUTE! Magazine circa 1985?	As a human? For 32 years. As a programmer? 24 years. As a professional programmer? 10 years.
2. What is your favorite language to date?	Zulu	English, then C#, followed very closely by Ruby.
3. What is your favorite pattern/architecture?	Factory is a nice classic pattern. Also anything with queues.	My favorite pattern is the one that elegantly solves whatever problem I happen to be facing, but not wanting to be a wet blanket, I choose Decorator.
4. Is formal academic education necessary for development?	It can’t hurt.	If you mean CS, I sure hope not. I was a math major. In general, I think a formal academic education can help a lot, but is not necessary.
5. Are software developers – engineers or artists?	Cat-herders	Don’t take this as a cop-out, but a little of both. I see it more as craftsmanship.
6. Do you blog? If so how long and how many subscribers?	5+ years ~22,000 subscribers	~6 years, but haacked.com for almost 4 – 6700 subscribers
7. If you could read only one blog, which one would you pick?	CodingHorror	CodingHorror
8. What is the biggest mistake you made along the way?	Not paying attention in database class.	I hadn’t done a good job of testing a password reset feature for a large music community site. The person to catch the bug was the child of a VP (or an investor, I can’t remember).
9. Anyone in the software community you are star struck around?	Fortune 1000 CTOs.	Anders Hejlsberg – that guy is crazy smart. Once during a one-on-one conversation with him I kept telling myself “Don’t sound stupid. Don’t sound stupid.”
10. What is the secret of your success, expressed in one word?	Sticktoitiveness	Fun
